One would have hoped that Barack Obama's assumption to the Presidency would have driven a stake through the heart of the government-sponsored racist practice of affirmative action. Alas, no; the most powerful man in the world has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to race-based preferences, most notably by the appointment to the Supreme Court of Sonia Sotomayor, famous for disregarding unfairness to white firemen and stating that a "wise Latina" was more qualified to judge than any white guy.
Up until yesterday, Mr. Obama had denied that he received any personal benefits of affirmative action. By definition, affirmative action puts people in positions they would otherwise not be in; this can't apply to Mr. Obama, who, we are told, is the most brilliant man to sit in the Oval Office since Thomas Jefferson, his performance there notwithstanding.
Mr. Obama did not need affirmative action to claim the Presidency; that was his by right of his awesome intellect, his extensive administrative experience, and his all-surpassing gravitas as a community organizer. However, the job of most powerful man on earth, as exalted as it might be, is still not sufficient scope for his unparalleled talents.
In a conversation with a group of Jewish rabbis, the President said that there is one more title he needs to take on:
"We are God's partners in matters of life and death," Obama said... quoting from the Rosh Hashanah prayer that says that in the holiday period, it is decided "who shall live and who shall die." [emphasis added]
At least he was more modest about his proper role than Time, Newsweek, and all the other liberal rags and partisan hacks who portrayed him in godlike images. He doesn't expect to actually be God Himself; a simple, though active, partnership with the Almighty will suffice.
What's particularly interesting is that last year, he stated that he is utterly unqualified for such a position! When asked by pastor Rick Warren when he felt that a baby should receive human rights, this was his response:
Answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade.
Darn right it's above his pay grade! He knows he's not qualified even to play God; he knows he's not qualified to make decisions of life and death and he was honest enough to say so in public.
Yet here he is, God's newly-anointed partner, with (Congress willing) full power to convene "death panels" and make final and binding rulings about who receives medical care and who doesn't - though, naturally, you're welcome to appeal any such decisions to the Great Judge as soon as you meet Him face to face.
A self-confessedly unqualified minority in a powerful position far beyond his stated pay grade? Affirmative action at its finest!
And the consequences will be... well, would we be accused of racism if we said the prospect looked pretty black? If God must be assigned a diversity-quota partner, can't we at least have someone with some relevant experience?
